Evaluation task 6: What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

Our group worked together and added annotations to our Thriller on youtube explaining the processes we took when editing and where and the uses of technology.

To see these annotations you have to go to the Hurtwood house Media Youtube and find the video named Latency. You click on this video and check the settings, making sure annotations are turned on. From there you can watch through the opening sequence alongside the explanation.

I have also embedded the video below so it's easier to locate:

Evaluation Task 5: How did you attract/address your audience?

How did you address/attract your audience?
I have conducted an interview to answer this question to the best standard.

Underneath is my transcript for my above interview on soundcloud:

Interviewer:
Hi Daisy, would you mind if I ask you a few questions about the opening sequence you've just made?

Daisy:
Yeah, ok, i'll happily answer some questions.

Interviewer:
Ok, First question:
What pleasures could your audience take from watching your opening sequence?

Daisy:
Well, there are a range of things included in our opening sequence which would interest our target audience. For example: violence, explosions and gunfire. The reveal of the virtual reality headset at the end connotes to it being about a video game, similar to call of duty, which is one of the things people of our target audience would play in their free time. There are typical action movie conventions meaning action movie fans, who would usually be in our target audience range, would enjoy the features of our opening sequence that implemented these conventions. For example: violence, loud pace, quick cutting and handheld camera work. Similarly it follows the usual video game conventions including: complex guns, explosions and loud ambience.

Interviewer:
Wow, you're right, there is a range. Ok so, what genre have you made? Could this be a sub-genre? and which other films might be influential?

Daisy:
We have made a thriller which also involves an action aspect therefore the sub-genre is action-thriller. Other films which were influential are Gamer, Lets Be Evil and Saving Private Ryan.

Interviewer:
Great. Moving onto setting, where did you set your thriller and why?

Daisy:
Well, the majority of our thriller was shot at Delta Force Paintball course because it was the most representative for our thriller. It was great place to create the whole battle field atmosphere. The ending was set in the editing suite which was a great location because it gave a suggestion that the character enjoys things including a computer. It looked great alongside the Virtual reality headset!

Interviewer:
Yes that all makes sense, do you think your audience will respond to this?

Daisy:
Yes, i think it will because the Delta force could represent a call of duty map which has the same features and is a similar size. Additionally, the final location should be recognised by the target audience as they should instantaneously make the connection between the computer and the VR headset.

Interviewer:
Okay next question, What is your plot line and how does it attract your audience?

Daisy:
The thriller is essentially about a hacker who hacks into video games and the VR headsets and kills people with this virus, not only in the game but in real life. This video game association alongside the action would attract the audience.

Interviewer:
Sounds interesting, and the characters? Will the audience like them?

Daisy:
Well, most of the characters are the same age as the target audience so the audience is likely to relate to how these characters act and language they use as if they're playing a game. This making the opening sequence more enjoyable t watch and realistic. The fact that the western audience is probably not very likely to be able to understand the Russian means that they probably don't relate themselves to this side as much making more of a dislike towards them. The fact there is one member of the Russian side who is a lot older than the rest could also make the audience feel more intimidated by their side.

Interviewer:
Yes thats understandable, what about narrative devices... have you used any?

Daisy:
Yes, at the end of the sequence there is a plot twist and it is revealed that all the action was in a game. Also suspense is made by loud sudden noises and quick cuts.

Interviewer:
Which social groups are you appealing to and how?

Daisy:
Our opening sequence is aimed at males, aged 19-20. we are appealing to this target audience by including violence, action and through use of location.

Interviewer:
Do you have any music?

Daisy:
No, we thought a soundtrack would be too distracting when we want the audience to focus on the dialogue and sound effects. This also makes the sequence more realistic to the audience. Soundtrack would also reduce the level of tension which a san-music sequence provides.

Interviewer:
What information did you give in your titles?

Daisy:
We included the name of the studio, the production company and the director. Our audience may recognise the director or the studio and know that they have made other action-packed films or films similar that they have enjoyed.

Interviewer:
Great, do you have to say anything about your editing or film style?

Daisy:
The opening sequence is fast paced with CGI used to create muzzle flashes and blood splatters and we tried to make it Saving Private Ryan-esque.

Interviewer:
Your thriller opening sequence sounds very interesting and i look forward to watching it, thanks for the great interview.

Daisy:
Thanks for having me.

Evaluation Task 4 Part 2: Facebook Profile

After receiving the results from the interviews, as a group, we decided that a male of an age between 18-20 would fit perfectly as the target audience. With an interest in (first person) video games, thrillers, action movies, movies with violence or gore, virtual reality and movies with a mystery aspect makes this group really work with the type of thriller opening that we are making. If the film was to be carried on I really think that they would be interested in going to see it. In comparison to this, the people outside of this demographic that we also interviewed weren't interested in video games, or couldn’t tolerate violence. As a way of showing the type of person that would be a perfect example of our target audience, I have made a Facebook account which has an introduction, lists his likes, has comments posted that he might say and has photos posted which prove his interest in warfare/action games.

Evaluation task 4 Part 1: Who would be the audience for your media product?

For our thriller opening, we needed to think of the age range and gender the movie would be aimed at. This would help when marketing so that we know the usual interests of this group of people. To find our Target audience, we thought it would great to interview a sample of different age groups and genders so that we got an idea of each age category's likes and dislikes and will then be able to see which age group and gender would be the most fitting to our thriller opening sequence. These are the questions that we will ask:

Questions

1.     Who is your favourite director?
2.     Who is your favourite actor/ actress?
3.     What is your favourite movie?
4.     What is your favourite genre? For example: Rom-com
5.     Are you a fan of Xbox/ PS4/ video games? If so which console?
6.     Are you a fan of action/ war games?
7.     Are you put off movies involving violence?
8.     Do you like action movies?
9.     Do you enjoy watching thriller movies?
10.  Have you ever played a first person shooting games? For example: call of duty?
11.  Have you ever used a virtual reality head set or want to try it?
12.  Do you prefer when you know the narrative of the story clearly or do prefer when the storyline is a mystery?

Remember to note down Age, gender, where they are from.

We think that all of these questions have a link to our thriller and would be useful when finding out our target audience. Knowing the interests of different people will determine whether they would be interested in our thriller or not. We emphasised the amount of questions about video games because its important that are target audience has an interest in or would like to play video games of this style because thats a main theme in the film.

Here's the video showing some of the information we collected when interviewing different age groups and genders:

Below are some graphs we put together with the data we received:

Evaluation task 3: What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

What Institution is likely to make our film?

Thinking about which Institution would be the most suited to make a film is very important. It enables you to think about if you were in charge of this institution: how would you create this film?how big would the budget be? Who would be featured or directing? how would you market the film? and many other questions. I will approach this question in two ways: If i were to pick an institution out of the Big 6 or if i were to pick a small independent UK institution, which would I pick?

The Big 6

Obviously this selection was a hard bunch to pick from with strong competition. After looking into all of the Big 6 studios and the films that they have produced I have decided 20th Century Fox was the institution most likely to make my film.  First of all, here is some facts and history of the institution:

Click here to see this Glog on the Glogster website

One of the reasons for my belief in this institution making this film is because there is an ongoing list of action thrillers produced by 20th Century fox:

The ones stated above are only a few of the many action thrillers produced by this institution. The one film that really caught my eye when looking through the massive list of films made by 20th Century Fox was Assassins Creed. The reason for this being is because Assassins Creed is also a Video game, therefore having a strong link between it and our thriller. Knowing that 20th Century Fox have an interest in Action thrillers and like the idea of making a film about a video game really creates an imagery for me of my groups film being successfully made by this institution. Although 20th Century Fox don't tend to specialise in a certain genre or have a specified target audience (as they produce a variety of different films), you can tell that they are extremely good when it comes to creating action-thrillers by the number of well known and successful films of this genre that they have made.

The budget for assassins creed was $125 million, if this institution were to make my movie with the budget of this similar movie,  I think the film would look incredible as high technology would be able to be used and there would be less limitations when it comes to things like locations and getting licences.

When it comes to marketing, they would use both traditional and new media. This way making sure it is seen worldwide- reaching a larger audience and reminding people constantly of the film giving them an urge to want to see it. I have looked at the ways 20th Century Fox has marketed their movies in the past and Deadpool (an action movie) is a prime example of a film that they have marketed using extremely clever strategies. They would use the holiday marketing strategy: making videos and other festive things which would promote the movie. Ryan reynolds posted a halloween themed video as a way of promoting the film which has since gained over 4.2 million views. Another way they built up the excitement through festive times is when the 12 days of Deadpool started in December; it was a christmas teaser leading up to a new trailer- this building new fans and people excited to watch this movie. Social media now plays a major part in Marketing. The main actors from the movie posting things on their social media accounts is a big help when it comes to promotion as it makes a larger audience aware of the movies and want to go to the see the film to watch that certain actor. Small things in magazines, radio and TV such as interviews or teasers would also be a way 20th Century Fox may market their movies because it raises awareness and demand for their films.

Independent UK institution

I found it hard when it came to looking at small independent institutions and seeing which would make films similar to mine as the films aren't as well know or as easy to find. The one i believed was most fitting to my groups thriller was Vertigo. First of all, some facts and history about the institution:
Click here to see this Glog on the Glogster website
The main reason for this choice of institution is because of a film made by them which holds a key element to our thriller. The film "Lets be Evil" is a film by Vertigo films which is about a learning program for gifted children who wear Augmented reality glasses to assist their education and every thing gets out of control and its obvious by the trailer that the film is quite horrific and thrilling. In our thriller, the virtual reality headset is used leading to horrific events, so knowing that vertigo has a film that is very similar in that sense instantly tells us they are likely to make a film like ours. Other films that they have made of a similar genre are: Monsters, Out Post, WΔZ and many other films. Similarly to 20th Century Fox that make a variety of different genre films with different target audiences. Although this may be, a large majority of their films seem to be over 15 rated and tend to have a drama, thriller, horror genre theme to them.

Vertigo films are usually made on a low budget using new directors and lower priced technology- this meeting our films ethos. Vertigo would mainly use new media marketing as it is cheaper (the film would have a lower budget) and can be spread internationally through interaction and updates. Vertigo uses other clever ways to promote their films, for example: for the film Monsters, Vertigo had a blogging event with Jameson whisky, this clever online marketing event helped lead to vertigo making 1000% profit. Traditional media would also be used but not as much as it is more expensive, can miss out on the younger demographic that are able to watch the film because they would be more interested in using technology, and there is limited content which is hard to update. If Vertigo wanted to make sure the money spent on their marketing is worth it, they are more likely to market via new media.

My Choice of Institution

Overall, when looking at the two institutions, it is clear that there is so many more opportunities for success when working with a higher budget. I think 20th Century Fox would be the best institution for our groups thriller because high priced technology is needed to make the shooting scenes as realistic as possible. Also, in terms of marketing,  more money for marketing means a larger audience and more money is made out of the film. 20th Century Fox has a bigger fan base than a smaller institution therefore therefore that instantly makes the film known about. Being able to work with well known actors and directors makes more people want to see the film as well leading to higher demand. Their thrillers and action films are all very successful therefore my thriller would be in very good hands with this institution.
