Editing process

We used Adobe Premier pro cc to edit our music video. As a group we all watched and named all of the rushes, we grouped them into what shots we would like to use the most and the ones we don't intend to use. After that we synced all of the performance shots so that they were in time to the track on the software. We all started to make a performance shot together and allocated Antonia to be our main editor outside of our class time slots. Whenever we were in class or had a free time we would help give feedback on what she had done so far and helped add things. Once the performance cut was made we duplicated it and started thinking about the narrative part of the video and the order in which the shots will be placed. We went back and perfected the performance cut and then once we knew the structure of our video we chose which narrative shots we would like to use and complied the two together. There were points where shots didn't work well together or jumped unintentionally so we reviewed the video many times and changed those points. We also asked each group member and other class members to watch it and give feedback just so that we could change the things that they think weren't working. After that we finished it all off by colour grading it and exporting it. Throughout the editing process we used our experience from editing our thriller opening sequences last year and used shot cut keys such as "C" or "I" to speed up the process. We remembered to save it all as we went so that we wouldn't lose any of our work. For me I believe the biggest struggle was ordering the narrative into the performance cut whist making sure it made sense but overall I think it was successful.

Digipak in progress

The Digipak is currently in progress and is being made by Antonia and myself. We have got the band members to send in baby photos of themselves and added photos taken on the shoot day and other photos of the band members for the inside of the Digipak. The style we are going for is a playful collage alongside little doodles overlapping the images. These doodles are reflected again on the front and back of the digipak. I have created a  drawing of an old polaroid camera doodle using photoshop to go on the front of the digipak and on the back there are some doodles that relate to the songs. The front and back cover both have a "night sky" blue background as it is a great colour to contrast the white doodles and titles. We have also included copywriting and record company on the back.

Strengths and weaknesses:
Child-like quality through the doodles and the photographs
The font goes well with the style,
Although, the photographs look messy the way that they are edited,
Doodles over the photographs would look cool,
Needs a Title of the album and the name of the band on the front cover
Need photos for the CD section to create a collage.

We will take this all into consideration when continuing with the creation process of the digipak.

Website in progress

Sean and Em are taking control of making the website from the template I made them and i'm making sure to check up on it and make sure everything is being included. It is nearly done, just some photos are needed to be added but in general the main things that need to be on a website have been included, such as: an "About" section about the band and also about each member, tour dates, merchandise, a section about their newest release with the video attached to it and social media accounts. All of this is needed to create the bands "star image" and interest the target audience. We are thinking about adding a gallery of photos of the band from the shoot day and other points so that the target audience can see their faces and fun relationships with one another more.

Here are some screenshots of how it is looking at the moment:

When you hover over the squares detailed come up about the events.

We thought it was key to include images of their faces so that fans would know exactly what they look like and could build a star image for the band.

Once The video is up on Youtube we will add the video on here and maybe write a bit about it.

We believed it would be great to add an about and if it came from the band so it felt more personal to the audience.

Once we have finished the digipak we will add how you can buy the album on here.

We added this to keep their fans up to date.

We chose central London to show that the band are from Urban England.

We need to add the record company here.

Audience feedback- Focus Group

A way in which we gathered feedback for our video was a focus group. We invited another class in to ask questions face to face and record it. Here is what we got:

https://soundcloud.com/morcadi-nefzen/audience-feedback-focus-group

Here is the overall feedback we got from the focus group:

What do you think was the narrative?
-The two kids growing up and enjoying life - kids growing into musicians and like to dance/have fun
-like a dream -growing up (children acting like adults, adults acting like children)

What do you think the most successful elements of the video were?
-The switching between the ages made it more enjoyable to watch - The clear set and costume portrayed it to be fun and joyful

What do you think the message of the video is?
-be positive - just dance - you dont really need to grow up

Similar music videos?
-Busted 'What I go to school for'

Least successful elements?
-Shaky camera at the end - some parts of the dancing are awkward - wanted to know more about other members of the band

Music Video Feedback interview

To make sure we were 100% finished with our music video we interviewed 6 people with different gander and different ages in terms of two years of students here. We asked questions such as: What were the strengths of the video and were there any weaknesses? What do you think is the narrative of the video? and What were your favourite parts?.

People commented on how they liked how there were shots of both ages and the way we portrayed the concept, how they liked the look of the half set and the colours we used to create this fun, "playhouse" look, how good the casting was of the mini-me's in comparison to Freddy and Ellis, another commented on how he liked the narrative "funny sketches".

They saw that the video was about the bands relationship and feeling young and relaxed. They also noticed how the younger kids wanted to grow up wanting to do the same thing and be in the music industry.

Many stated that their favourite shots were the narrative shots which we were surprised about as we were worried about these shots not being effective enough, saying the shots were dynamic. Another also commented saying she liked the ending how the contrast was shown between the older and young.

Rough Cut Feedback

After making a rough cut, we realised that some shots did not work. With help from other peoples views, we worked out and rearranged certain shots so that they matched both the music and made sense in spacing in terms of performance and narrative. We noticed that the lip syncing was off at small sections so we reworked that. We also looked back over our rough cut and decided to group certain shots in order to show off the bands musical skills.

Social Media Page for the band

For our band, we wanted to create an Instagram page as a way of increasing their exposure and creating a star image. Most bands and artists use social media as a platform for growth so that they can pull in a larger and worldwide audience. It acts as a great marketing tool and a great way to show off their personalities, style, relationships with each other, skills, passions, and show what goes on behind the scenes at music video shoots and live performances!

You can see here that there is a large gallery of photos that audience members can interact with by liking and commenting. This is a perfect way to build a group of fans.
On each photo we have created captions, either saying whats going on or reflecting the bands ideas. This makes the account more personal and can make audience members feel more connected to the band members.

Music Promo - Evaluation of shoot day

To prepare for our shoot day, we arranged to meet in the studio at 3-6pm the day before and start painting and setting up our first set. We did this to ensure we were fully prepared for the next day and could start shooting as soon as possible. Painting our set and seeing all our props made us all really excited for the next day! We got all the props ready and in place and made sure that we were fully prepared to shoot the next day.

At 8:30, after breakfast, we met with the band members to get them ready. I curled Freddie's hair to make him look more like the child version of him, whilst Antonia and Emmy did Ellis' hair and make up. Then I applied a bit of make up to each of the members to make their faces look fresher for the camera. I also looked at what the band members had brought in clothing wise and styled them with what I thought looked best together. We made sure that we were prepared and on time and ready to start shooting at 9. Later at 11, Holly and Harvey came in- I curled Holly's hair and put make up on to match Ellis' and sprayed Harvey's hair out of his face. We got them into their clothes and compared them to their "older-selves

When we started to shoot, the studio looked just how we planned! The half set looked so effective on the camera and we were extremely happy how the lighting gave energy to it. I am very please with how we created the look of our concept. Once the props came in: for example, the teddy bears and pencil chairs, alongside toy and inflatable instruments, it helped us really achieve the look our concept. The playhouse looked exactly how we imagined once the band was in, we were over the moon with this set.
On the shoot day we made sure to divide the production roles. Throughout the day we alternated so each of us had a try at each role. This meaning we all got a chance to direct, take charge of the camera and use the clapper board. The person without a role checked the screen to make sure the footage was looking how we wanted it to and checked the styling of the band.

Personally, I think I kept on top of what was going on and was involved in everything. I was checking the timings according to the schedule and took part in as much as I could. I also made sure the actors were getting enough food and drink and had breaks between shots. We all made sure that there was a constant positive atmosphere being created and made sure the actors were happy with what they were doing. I also directed the children quite well to ensure the matching shot was exactly how we wanted it to look and they knew exactly what to do in the narrative shots. We made sure that they saw how the band acted when in the playhouse to show them the amount of energy we needed from them and make them feel comfortable with what they had to do.

There wasn't many problems on the shoot day but I will name the few. The second set's wall paper for the background wasn't wide or high enough so it made it hard in terms of how we were going to film it and you could also see a line where the two sheets met. We played with lighting and placement of the props/ set to make this less noticeable and make the shots work. A problem we had in the first set was because the set was so small in comparison to the members of the band, they found it hard to be constantly crouching, we made sure that they got out and stretched between each shot. This slowed down the process slightly but we were on time and had nothing to worry about. Another problem was, the actors ate most of the sweets for a narrative shot so there wasn't as many as we had got for the shot, this was our fault through miscommunication so we just added some more chocolate bars. At one point Phil's guitar lost a string but that was solved quickly.

The part of the shoot I think was most successful was the performance shots of the band all together (especially the hand held shots). The hand held footage added to the playfulness of the set. The bands aesthetic worked so well and we created their star indie-pop band image we intended to. They all fully committed to the shot with full energy each time which we are so thankful for- the footage looked just how we wanted it to.

I wish we had planned how we were going to link some of the narrative shots to the video. This lead to us cutting some of the narrative shots, leaving us with less footage. Although this may be, i think we have the right amount of footage and got exactly what we needed to make it clear. I think our production team worked very well with each other, making sure we were involved in equal amounts. There were a few disagreements in terms of what shoots we were going to cut but this wasn't a major problem. I think as a group we had a great day and worked very well together whilst also enjoying ourselves and the experience.

In terms of website and artwork, I think we will need to make it slightly more playful in colour and what is included. I think we should include photos of the band together and have fun merchandise. For the digipak, we will now be able to finish it with the photos we have taken of the band in and off set. We could also relate the colours on the website and artwork more to the set now.

Shoot Day Schedule

Here is the schedule for our shoot day, we made this to make sure that everything was going to plan on the day and people knew exactly when to come to meet us. We have realised it would be best if the children come in later because they have to travel further and the day would be shorter for them.We will do the performance shots first in the play house, and then performance and playing shots of the children in the set. After that, we will have lunch and change the set allowing us to shoot the narrative element.

Contact list

To ensure that we could communicate before the shoot date and on the day if something went wrong, we made a contact list with the phone numbers and email addresses of each person involved.
This is all part of the planning process for the shoot day to make sure that each person knew exactly what they needed to bring and let us give each person updates.

Digi pack draft

We decided to look at the idea of growing up and wanted to convey that in the album artwork. All the tracks have connotations to growing up and the small white doodles all connect to the different track names. On the inside of the Digi pack, we've put baby photos of our band and crew to show the transformation from youth to adulthood. On the next page it will be pictures of the band grown up with the same white doodles on the band as the baby photos. Finally the front of the digi pack will be a white illustration on the front of a polaroid camera alongside the bands name. On the back will be the production company name and other details that are needed such as copyrighting and the year of release.

Template for our Bands Website

After looking at Similar artists websites, I went onto Wix and started creating my own for our band. Here is the link of the outcome: daisyjelley0.wixsite.com/krystalk. I found the key features that band websites have for example: merchandise, tour dates,  news and info about them, online booking and a contact. If you scroll down the main home page, I have included a banner, their new single, going down to tour dates, a biography of the band, the band members, a gallery of their photos, their merchandise, a contact, and a place where you can sign up for subscription. I made sure to include copyrighting from their Record label and the companies phone number.

On the top menu bar, I included Titles that linked to other pages, These are probably the main options people would go on the site looking for, therefore this bar is useful. Below are the pages these titles link to.

When making this template, I kept in mind the genre of music the band produce, the star image were wanting to create for the band and what interest the target audience. This lead to the bold block colours to represent the fun, pop atmosphere the the band creates. I lead to choices such as: putting the 'shop' and 'book now' on the top menu bar as it is what the target audience are likely to be going onto the site for. Including a large amount of photos and their social media account at the top, goes alongside the likes and interests of the target audience. The band are represented as indie pop "stars" with a large social media following and a constant want for merchandise, concert tickets and to read about them by the audience.
