Narrative scenes updated
15:32The chosen scenes:
3. Car scene
Holly is in a small mortised pink, barbie-like car. She leans back and relaxes.
5. Food scene
Sat on a thrown with a bowl of junk food (cakes, sweets, chocolate) Harvey is seen to be eating it and drinking a Capri-sun
6. Spa scene
Holly is sat on a lay back chair, Harvey comes in and puts cucumber on her eyes.
We have chosen these three narrative scenes out of the 6 because it shows a dream element for both characters and then one in which they can both be included.
Hair and Make up
03:35
For the boys hair we will put product in Harvey's hair to give it some control and make it slightly neater and for Freddie's we will have to curl it and scruff it up slightly so that their hair looks similar.
For the girls we will do slight waves in their hair to keep it looking slick and controlled yet not too unnatural. For the make up we will do natural make up, with a glowy look.
The rest of the band members will have product put into their hair and have it styled in a way that it is our of their faces. For all of the boys, we will put a little bit of make up on for a bit of coverage.
Costume- other members of the band
02:45
We would like to dress the band in indie clothing, this including funky t-shirts and Shirts, black jeans and a shoes of their choice that will go with the outfit. We are going to ask the members what sort of clothing they have and see if it works with the music genre and the bands image. Below are some examples at the type of look were going for.
Main Costume
02:37
We will by matching outfits for both Harvey and Freddy to wear. We will be doing this in order to inform the audience that these two people are the same people. They will be wearing a block coloured top underneath, black ripped jeans, black vans and a leather jacket.
For Holly and Ellis we will be doing the same and buying them matching outfits. We thought it would be even more clearer that they are the same people if we could get them to wear the same accessories.
Narrative Element
01:371. The contract scene.
Harvey is stood up as the contracts fall around him. He then sits down and takes his large crayon to sign the contracts.
2. Dressing room.
Harvey sits on the chair after it is brought in? A stylist then enters and starts to do his hair, he is sat drinking a capri sun.
3. Car scene
Harvey is in a small mortised car, potentially with a young blonde girl (holly). He is wearing a fur coat with his hard around her as he sings. She then gets out and blows him a kiss.
4. Photo shoot.
Photographer is in shot, two studio lights are either side of Harvey. Every time it cuts Harvey changes outfit.
5. Food scene
Sat on chair with burger king crown. Someone comes in with a load of junk food (cakes, burger king etc...) Harvey is seen to be eating it and lapping it up.
6. Spa scene
Harvey is sat on a lay back chair with a face mask on, cucumber eyes. Someone is massaging his shoulders (tbc)
Phil Tidy
13:19Phil Tidy is a famous commercial, Music video and online/content producer, working with some of the biggest labels, bands and projects across the media platforms. He is the curator of BUG Videos (http://bugvideos.co.uk), and dedicates on discovering new creative and technological forms in film, he is executive producer in SQUIRE (http://www.squirestudio.com/). On Friday the 13th, he came in to talk to us about the music industry. He has produced over 100 music videos and films. His works include working with stars and companies such as: Shakira, Lucozade, Adidas, Everything Everything and Oasis. 800 music videos being displayed on the big screen and 500 of them at the BFI.
The session with him included him demonstrating the process of making a music video and talking about the relationship between the company and producer.
A music video is part of marketing promotional material when a new piece of music is released and is made to help sell records. It is a way of advertising the band, promting them, their style and their ideology. Music videos essentially started with MTV in the early 80's but 31% of all music is now consumed on music and streaming sites.
Phil stated that the music industry is worth around 4 Billion every year with over 150,000 employed in the industry.
He told us the steps of commissioning a music video
1. you start off by showing a good pitch to a company either by yourself or you join a production company to get a pitch in
2. You get a pitch in
3. You have to then gain trust from a commissioner or band manager and have them like your idea.
4.You have to create an idea, style, scripting
6. Then receive details from the company.
7. You Present them the budgets
8. You then need to receive a contract from the company.
9. Plan a detailed schedule and budgets
10. Film it!
His tips were:
Don't waste money on small things that go unnoticed and instead put the money where you can see it. Feed the cast to ensure they have enough energy- they get tired and restless quickly.
Make everything as smooth as possible by planning everything- thinking about the little things.
Make sure that you have found a team of people you know you can work well with.
Below is a Video he showed us at the end of the session- It is Everything Everything's video "handsome" that is an example of his work:
Animatic
06:15To insure that the story board was not dismissed, we made an animatic fitting it to the song. This helped us visualise what shots would come where in the music video. After watching this video we realised that it would be best to keep to the innocence of the children and the band instead of making them "smoke". Also Luke, who is in charge of the music videos, gave us feedback that 6 narrative scenes may be too many, from this we decided that the video would work better with less narrative scenes so we narrowed down the 6 to 3.
We are going to have a narrative element showing kids dreaming of what it would be like to grow up and being in a band, as well as this, there is going to be a performance element where the band will set in a playhouse type set and will be playing a combination of their real instruments and toy instruments.
Our Band
05:20Set Designs
05:05
We had a meeting with the production team and discussed how this will all work in terms of set and lighting and how we are going to create these scenes.
Music Video Auditions
05:03
In order to check the people we were auditioning performed well on camera, we auditioned them by asking them to perform whilst playing the instrument/ singing:
Who are the Kristal Kicks
05:01The image we are creating for our band is very casual with a rocky edge. They are a four piece consisting of 3 male members and one female member from London. They're very quirky and all the members have a different niche. As a result of this their style cant be narrowed down specifically but each member has individuality. They are young and fun, linking to the current youth wanting to be different with their indie-pop genre music. They are all very musically talented and work great together as a team- showing this through their relationships and their social media accounts.
Contacting the Label
06:48Below is the email we sent out to the record company that Little comets belong to, to ensure that we are allowed to use the song when creating our music video for our band.
To Steve
We are a group of A Level students working on an A Level project for a qualification in Media Studies. We are writing to request permission to use the following track as part of this project:
Dancing Song by Little Comets
With your permission the track would be used as the accompaniment to a short form video that is made purely for assessment purposes and will have no commercial usage. The video will be viewed only by members of the school community and the assessor of the examination board.
The artist and the copyright holder will of course be fully recognised in the pre-production and evaluation material that accompanies the project. We can also include a full copyright notice if required both in the planning material and on the video itself.
Yours sincerely
