Timeline

As a Group we focused on the song and timings in the song to create a timeline of what is happening and when in the music video. The storyboard helped this process.

More Feedback:
Upon our second chat with Luke our ideas started to change and develop again. We started to look at making the video more childlike and playful then go down the serious route. We thought about the possibility of cutting the set in half (shrinking it) and making the whole band bent over and struggling to play the instruments, with the possibility of making it look like a playhouse. We also decided that we wouldn't use the adult version and the younger version in the same shots together as it may start to look like they were brothers and not indeed the older and younger version of each other. Upon discussion we started to backtrack and think of our other ideas that we had before, we went back to the idea of using the teddy bears as the rest of the band and make it look like the young singer has made it all up in his head.

we then decided we need to come up with 12 scenes as to what a young boy would think being a singer is like. We are yet to come up with the finale 12, but some ideas to start off with are; him holding a giant crayon and having massive contracts falling from above him, hundreds of girls screaming and throwing sweets at him.

Storyboard

I have learnt from AS the importance of storyboarding, as a storyboard in media is a graphic representation of how your video will unfold.
Below is the story board that i have hand drawn for our music video idea.

Groups Treatment

Our video hones in on and emphases the exploitative nature of the music industry. To portray this we chose to use a child actor to play the lead singer of the adult band who’s adult self is later revealed to the audience. To do so we chose the topics of; loneliness, substance abuse and invasion of privacy. This would be done with shots i.e., showing him in his dressing room alone and being made to sign several pictures of himself. Along side narrative the performance aspect of our video will play a key role in showing the juxtaposing fun side of the music industry. This would be done using quick shots, with high energy performers. Harvey would be on a block so he is of the same height as the rest of the band. In-conjunction to the narrative and performance element, our third aspect of the video is conceptual. The adult and child (lead singer) are seen painting on a large white screen wearing overalls. The end picture they make shows both of them with there backs to the camera holding hands. The picture would be made up of hand prints of different coloured paint.

Pitch Feedback

When my group presented our pitch we had quite positive feedback. The idea was liked but needed to be in more detail in terms of thinking about set, costume and lighting. We were told we needed to be clearer on the scenes/ locations the band will be performing in or the narrative will occur in so that we knew exactly what will happen where and when and we can plan further. To do this my group will plan together exactly what will happen and what we need to allow this to happen. We were told it might be hard working with children but using a child that does professional acting work would be great for the job. We will plan what is going to happen at each point of the song so that we have enough film to cover the length of the song and we know what set and how many actors we will need in the music video.

Target Audience- Our Music Video

Target Audience for The Kristal Kicks

Our Demographic audience which would be the ideal consumer for our band is an audience around the age of 15-17. The band will focus on pulling in an audience of girls with their image because girls tend to have a larger want for all male bands and there are many girls which enjoy listening to this genre of music. Physiographically our audience will be people who are really interested in music, especially indie/ alternative, new bands. They would consume music mainly by streaming or watching music videos on sites like youtube. They would be an audience who frequently go to gigs and listen to Radio stations that play more music than just the songs in the charts. An example of a station they might listen to is Radio 1.

Institutional Context

When thinking about the Institution which would best represent our band, we searched for successful independent record companies. Below is the record company that I have found that I think would best represent the band

Glassnote records

Year established: 2007

Genre Focus: Indie/ alternative Rock, Folk, Hip hop

Glassnote is an independent Record company was quick to become one of the most influential in the scene. They released the critically-acclaimed debut record for Phoenix, this winning a Grammy for the best Alternative Music Album in 2010. Following on from this Mumford and Son's debut record, Babel, also won the Grammy for Album on the year. They have also worked with other artists such as Childish Gambino, AURORA, CHVRCHES, Daughter, Half Moon Run, The Strumbellas and Two Door Cinema Club.

I think this record company are perfect for our band because of the Genre they mainly focus on, how successful they have been and the similarities between some of the artists they have worked with alongside our band.

For example:
Two Door Cinema Club have a similar style to ours.

Similar Media Products

There are a few videos that have similar aspects or ideas. It is great to see how these ideas look in action and how successful they are.

Carly Rae Jepsen- I Really Like You.

In this video, Bill Murray is lip syncing to Carly Rae Jepsen. This is effective because It is a voice you would not expect in older man like him to have. I think is is successful and adds a sense of comedy. The fact that he is an extremely famous actor makes it even more successful. This idea links to ours because we are going to be using a young boy (around the age of 10) to be singing a song with a voice which is more mature.

Haribo Starmix Advert

Similarly to the video for "I Really Like You", the Haribo Starmix advert uses adults with children's voices, acting like children. We would use this idea but in the opposite way by using a young Boy but with him acting like an adult, imitating the lead singer.

One Direction- Kiss You

This behind the scenes style music video relates to our idea of showing our band behind the scenes (on set) and in places like the dressing room and recording studios. This is effective in this One Direction video because it shows how genuine/organic the band looks and gives the audience a sneak peak of how they act on set and how they always mess around and have great relationship with each other.

Stone Sour- Song 3

Lastly, the music video for this song also gives an insight of the behind the scenes. It shows the band performing alongside the process they go through getting ready. In my groups idea, we wanted to show the process in a similar way but with the young child being treated like how the singer is in this video.

Whatsapp- Group communication

As a way of communicating as a group about ideas and notes we have made in class, we have created a group chat on a social media network called Whatsapp. This allows us to share images, messages, voice notes and call each other about the work and any ideas we may have come up with. In the image below you can see that Antonia has sent images of notes that we all made in class together so that we are all able to access them and talk about them. It's a great way of communicating ideas alongside meetings in-person and it is perfect if one of us suddenly has an idea and want to share or jot it down before the idea gets lost.

Our Song Choice

Our final choice is: Dancing Song, Little Comets

We believe that this is a great song to cast a young band for. The positive energy and fun lyric would be great to work with alongside a youthful cast. It is a good song to dit rhythmically to and I believe a great narrative and performance element could be put together to create a successful music video.

Song options

After searching for a great song to do a music video from a band that was new and undiscovered was very hard. The main place that we used to search for this music was Spotify. This allowed us to see the popularity of the band and the song and we were able to look through the older albums to find songs that would work with our ideas. The songs we narrowed it down to were:

New Blood- Zande Wolf

Dancing song- Little Comets

One night in October- Little Comets

Panic like Tom- Ricas

Still counting-Volbeat

Band names

Heres a list of the potential names for the band:

  • The Loop Holes
  • Cosmic Universe
  • Theory of Hazard
  • Without League
  • Darlings of your Radio
  • Psychic Amateurs
  • The Kristal Kicks
  • The Atmospheric Difference
  • The Crystal Images
Out of these names we decided The Kristal Kicks would be the best name to represent the band. We found this process quite hard as it was difficult to form a band name that had to be dissimilar from any other band names. We had to check that the name hadn't already been used and it hasn't so we think it is a perfect name for our band we are forming.

Advanced Portfolio Brief

“You are a marketing company employed by a record label to manage the launch of a new artist – first single from the first album.  You will need to create a promotion package for the release, to include a music promo video, together with two of the following three options: a digipak for the album’s release and a website homepage for the band.”

Artist Research- Robin Loxley

Similarly to Raphael lake and Ben Fisher, no images come up of them when you type their names into google. One thing that does come up is their wikipedia pages:

Their music is available on Apple Music:

Soundcloud:
and Spotify:

Robin Loxley's song genres are a variety of Dance/Electronic, Rock, Country and Hip-hop/Rap. Jay's main focus is on Rock. Likewise to Raphael Lake and Ben Fisher, their identities remain unknown. This proves that they are all about the music and just want to share it with their audience without the publicity.

Artist Research- Everything Everything

Everything Everything is a band with members Jonathan Higgs, Jeremy Pritchard, Alex Robertshaw, Michael Spearman and Alex Niven. The genre of music the band plays varies between: Art pop,
Art Rock, Indie Rock, Electronica and Experimental pop.
When you type the bands name into google their wikipedia page comes up.

Similarly when you look on google images the images are filled with photos of the band.
They are with RCA Records, Geffen Records and Cult Records.
They are on Spotify:

Youtube:

Soundcloud:

their albums are available to buy:

and they have their own website:

The members of the band are always together in photos so that there is not a focus on just the lead singer. The photos of them tend to have a sense of symmetry and angles yet are simplistic. It is nice that the band feature audio recordings of what their latest album was influenced by on the website, this shows that their music has a lot of meaning.

Artist research- Raphael Lake and Ben Fisher

Raphael and Ben Fisher are quite unknown Artists. Their music feature on Spotify and Soundcloud amongst other Similar artists. They don't have their own personal accounts that they post from. Their songs are posted within albums/ playlists or by other people. For example, on Soundcloud for example, an account has posted their music but it is neither of the members in the song.

To me, this gives the impression that they like to be anonymous and they are just about the music. They want to remain absent to the audience because all they want to do is share music that they have made with them. There even isn't any photos of them on the internet to promote themselves.

Both artists have their own personal Spotify accounts where you can see some of their other works. You can notice that many of the songs on there are collaborations between the two artists. On Raphael's page there are a mixtures of genres of music, this shows that he isn't constant with a main choice of genre. Ben Fisher on the other hand mainly has the same genre of music for his songs.

Their songs are also available on Apple music:
